Hydrogen Peroxide Whitening Gel
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) works to whiten teeth because the O2 Oxygen molecule is quite unstable. It constantly seeks to break off and form a new bond with a friendly molecule. This means it is an eager partner in the whitening journey. When the O2 Oxygen Molecule finds and bonds to a carbon molecule it will turn the carbon from dark (which we see as a stain) to clear, (which we will see as whiter teeth.) Therefore, Hydrogen Peroxide Formulas are fast-acting with a “Wow” effect. The challenge with Hydrogen Peroxide is the fickle nature of the Oxygen molecule. If the Oxygen 1 finds another Oxygen molecule it will quickly bond with it to form an air bubble and disappear instead of whitening the teeth. So while, highly effective and fast acting, Hydrogen Peroxide Gels require maintenance.

Carbamide Peroxide Whitening Gel
Carbamide Peroxide (H2N) is much more stable than Hydrogen Peroxide and works to whiten the teeth based on the interaction of the Nitrogen molecule with the water introduced by saliva. Because of this, more time is required to instigate the whitening action, but the Nitrogen molecule’s stability delivers effects that are longer lasting. This suggests Carbamide Peroxide formulas are more suitable to alternate treatments such as overnight use that can be used less frequently for maintenance once the desired effect is achieved.
